relationships

We considered the possibilities (and complexities) of the various relationships in the project, centring around Liz Jones’ character (the first four or five of these are most critical):

  • Liz -> Bagryana (off camera). Liz directing her gaze towards Bagryana, replying directly. But does she know Bagryana? Why is Bagryana asking these questions? Why is Liz being filmed? Bagryana becomes a kind of audience for Liz (voice or no voice).
  • Liz -> Simon (cutting to treated material). Nature of this relationship very unknown.
  • Liz -> Camera. The camera is audience’s pov. An object, an object recording, a symbol of memory, and of time. And in this case we are talking of different types of cameras (HD, CCTV …) and different types of footage (treated in post, untreated, editing).
  • Liz -> DP (Cormac). Gaze very different when she is looking at him (as opposed to camera). Do we bring his presence/absence into the foreground at all?
  • Liz -> remembering/thinking. Gaze different - looking into ‘nothing’ in order to remember/think.
  • Liz -> past self (in dedo type footage)?
  • Simon -> Bagryana. Do these people know each other?

Who is the documenter (Bagryana)? To what extent are these various people (and the relationships between them) revealed? Are they distinguishable?
